Where Should You Live?

An isochrone is the actual area you can reach within a set amount of time, computed from live routing data along real roads and paths — not a straight-line circle around a point. Two locations with the same drive time can produce very differently shaped areas depending on the surrounding road network, rivers, highways, and terrain.

When you enter more than one location, the tool computes the geometric intersection of every individual isochrone — the exact region that's simultaneously within your specified travel time of all of them, not just close to one. If the areas don't overlap at all, the tool tells you rather than guessing.

Each location has its own mode, set independently, using realistic speed models for that mode of travel rather than a flat straight-line radius. A 15-minute walk and a 15-minute drive from the same point cover very different amounts of ground.

Sixty minutes is the maximum travel time our travel-time data provider supports per location, not an arbitrary limit we chose. It applies the same way to every location you enter, regardless of mode.

Once your search area is calculated, it's checked directly against official ZIP Code Tabulation Area (ZCTA) boundaries from the U.S. Census Bureau — the same geometry, not an approximation like a circle or a handful of sampled points. Only ZIP codes that genuinely intersect your search area are listed.

You can type an address and choose from live suggestions, or click the pin icon next to a field and tap a point directly on the map — useful for a general area you have in mind rather than a specific street address. Either way, the location is verified before it's used to calculate travel time.

Travel times reflect typical routing conditions, not real-time traffic. A 20-minute drive at midday can easily run longer during rush hour. Treat the search area as a reasonable estimate, and verify an actual commute at the time of day you'd travel it before relying on it.

Only driving and walking are modeled. Transit times depend heavily on schedules, transfers, and service quality that vary block by block, which made them too inconsistent to model reliably alongside routed driving and walking times.

This tool only models travel time and ZIP boundaries — nothing about schools, safety, walkability, or what homes in the area actually cost. It's meant to narrow down where to start looking, not to replace research into a specific neighborhood.
